AI governance is the set of internal rules that defines which AI an organisation may use, who is accountable when something goes wrong, and what must be checked. Rules on AI in Thailand may change, so follow official sources for their current status. Organisations that set their own rules now will adapt far faster.
If you do not yet know which teams use AI or which tools receive customer data, that is where real governance starts.
Why discuss AI governance now?
Good rules come from understanding how AI is actually used. An organisation with a clear inventory of AI use, knowledge of where data flows and a named owner for each workflow can answer questions from regulators or customers immediately. Without that information, the same answers can take weeks to assemble.
A common approach is to classify by risk
Across many jurisdictions, AI oversight does not treat every use the same way. It scales with impact.
✅ Prohibited uses that infringe people's rights or safety, such as deceptive practices or unlawful surveillance
✅ High risk work that affects rights, finances or decisions about people, such as screening job applicants or approving credit. These need human review and a record of the decision.
✅ General risk internal work that does not directly affect outsiders, such as summarising internal documents or drafting text. A clear usage policy is usually enough.
What should an organisation prepare?
- Build an inventory of AI use, covering approved tools and the ones staff use without telling anyone
- Assign an owner for each workflow, accountable for outcomes and for fixing errors
- Check what data reaches the model, especially personal data and customer records
- Write a usage policy people can read, not a document nobody opens
- Keep logs of system activity so decisions can be reviewed later

Common mistakes
⚠️ Waiting for a law before acting. Responsibility to customers and staff exists already, without any statute.
⚠️ Writing policy that nobody enforces. A policy without checks will not work in practice.
⚠️ Letting shadow AI grow. When staff use personal accounts because no approved option exists, the organisation loses track of where its data goes.
