Headlines about Thailand's AI market often come with large numbers, but those numbers do not always measure the same thing. Before you trust or use one, check what it counts.
A headline about how fast the AI market will grow can look impressive. On closer reading, it may count data centres, or software that simply has "AI" in its name. Separate the parts before you use the figure.
The market has three layers
The market is not one block. It has three layers, each growing and measured differently.
✅ Infrastructure, such as data centres, connectivity and cloud. It needs heavy investment and takes time.
✅ Platforms and models, such as language models, tools and services developers use to build systems.
✅ Business applications, such as applications, automation and agents that organisations actually deploy. This layer is the hardest to measure, because most use is not reported as a market figure.
Why the numbers disagree
Each estimate chooses its own definition. Some count provider revenue, some count organisations' spending surveys, and some combine all layers. The figures should not be compared directly without checking where they come from.
When you see a market number, ask three questions:
- Which layers does it count? Infrastructure, platforms or applications?
- What does it measure? Revenue, spending or forecasts?
- Who produced it, and for which period?
What this means for an organisation
If your organisation sits in the application layer, the market total matters less than two other questions: what work will benefit, and how much time and budget will it take?
- Plan from the problem you have, not from the claim that the market is growing
- Check which layer the product you are buying belongs to, because cost and risk differ a lot
- Keep your own numbers, such as time saved, which are more useful for decisions than a market total

Things to watch
⚠️ Trusting a headline without checking its definition. A large number may have nothing to do with how your organisation uses AI.
⚠️ Using market growth as an investment case. A growing market does not make your project worthwhile.
⚠️ Overlooking the application layer. This is where organisations create real value, yet it rarely has clear reported figures.
